The War Memorial of Korea, Seoul

4.6
Initially used as the Korean army headquarters, The War Memorial of Korea today serves to memorialize the nation's military history. Established in 1993, the building contains six indoor exhibition halls and one outdoor center, which displays more than 13,000 military items and war memorabilia. With the purpose to educate future generations by collecting, preserving, and showcasing historical records and relics, the museum has become one of the most prominent touristic landmarks of its kind in the world. Explore the halls divided into different themes, such as the Korean War, war history, and large equipment room, among others. Some special exhibitions require purchasing a ticket. • Very interesting and free. It not only shows tanks and so on outside but the inside shows a range of inner Korean wars since around 1300 or so. They are presented in a very interesting way including also videos and so on in English. Also interesting for children if they speak English or the parents are willing to translate. Would definitely recommend it. Go from the bottom floor up in chronological order.
  • Very tastefully done museum. The focus seems to be on Korean war history in general, versus specifically the Korean War. Not that it doesn't have a great exhibit on the Korean War which takes up almost half the museum. The rest goes from ancient Korean warfare, all the way to modern ROK deployments. The outdoor exhibits and building architecture are also great with stuff like a B-52s and Soviet tanks. It's a simple walk from the number 6 line subway station. Admission is free for the general museum. It offers tours in Korean and English. Almost all the exhibits have English and Chinese translations. I'd recommend spending a good 4 hours here to explore all three floors. There are clean bathrooms (with soap and toilet paper!) as well as a small cafe to get some coffee and a snack. There are free lockers (they do take 100 won deposit however) so you can store your backpacks and whatnot.
