National Palace Museum, Shilin

4.1
#1 of 251 in Museums in Taiwan
Home to an unsurpassed collection of Chinese artifacts and artworks, National Palace Museum preserves nearly 10,000 years of Chinese history with some items dating back to Neolithic times. Most of its 700,000 pieces--including ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, religious sculptures, jade carvings, weapons, and Qing and Ming dynasty furniture--were collected by Chinese emperors themselves. Officially founded in the Forbidden City in 1925, the museum was moved to its present building in 1965 and then expanded on several occasions due to the sheer size of the collection. Do not miss the most popular exhibits: a skillfully carved piece of jade shaped like a cabbage with two grasshoppers hiding in its leaves, a meat-shaped stone, and a bronze bell specially made for King Li of Zhou. • Guided tours around. With description, very easy to understand. There's rain on a weekday evening, can the main Chinese cabbage slowly see them clearly!

  • And anyway, people are much too. Horns you are looking for with Grasshopper, but it doesn't look as tired in gigantic. A little bit, but once I relaxed, also became a different impression.

  • From Lin went by bus. I would head to the National Palace Museum on the same bus could arrive without becoming anxious because there were a lot of people. Was not interested in kids, books, miniatures, sculptures and treasures in the watch.

  • The exhibits are remarkable and amazing with a lot of history behind them, very well explained and documented with some rare and ancient artifacts. In terms of displays, a commendable effort, But holy hell, the tour groups make the entire experience horrible. if you are planning to go alone, it is the worse museum to visit purely due to the sheer number of tour groups that just make every exhibit a painstaking effort to actually look at. Quite literally, I had to structure my viewing around the tour groups as its impossible to read anything with the groups all crowding around the main attractions. I had to view everything in a disjointed and convoluted way as the tour groups blocked everything. Instead of traveling from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 in my exhibits, I when from 3 to 7 to 1 to 3 to 5 to 4 just to avoid tour groups, to the point I can't remember what I have been to. I don't mind a crowded museum but a crowded museum means everyone is spaced out relatively well, but a place full of tour groups, they just hog each exhibit just to impress their groups and boy do some give lengthy historical back grounds but its too much. In all honesty, the museum should limit the number of tour groups that can enter at once. but for god sake, if you want to visit, do not visit on a crowded day, because the experience is just bad
  • This is an excellent museum to get lost in for hours on end. Though it will take you a little further afield from the other sights, it's worth spending some time there if you have more than a couple days in Taipei. We went with a tour, so they necessarily took us to some other spots nearby (which weren't great) but still worth the trip. There are quite a few historical items from Taiwan and East Asia that are wonderful to see. Strongly recommend a tour guide as well!
  • Is a good place to understand more on history. A huge collection of variety of paints and other manuscript. Is an eye opening experience. There is a souvenir shop inside the museum, do pay a visit to the shop. There is bus towards city and the museum. But may need some time to wait bus according to the planned schedule.
  • Large collection. Easy to get to. Some items hard to see because of low light and reflections. Lots of tour groups. Small cafe with light fare.
  • The museum is really cool. I think there is enough to see that you could spend hours there looking at the variety of history and special artifacts. We spent about 3hr here and only saw a portion of what there is to see. Lots of people, and you have to check your bags. Luckily you get your money back when you get your bag.
