National Palace Museum, Taipei

4.1
#1 of 170 in Museums in Taiwan
Home to an unsurpassed collection of Chinese artifacts and artworks, National Palace Museum preserves nearly 10,000 years of Chinese history with some items dating back to Neolithic times. Most of its 700,000 pieces--including ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, religious sculptures, jade carvings, weapons, and Qing and Ming dynasty furniture--were collected by Chinese emperors themselves. Officially founded in the Forbidden City in 1925, the museum was moved to its present building in 1965 and then expanded on several occasions due to the sheer size of the collection. Do not miss the most popular exhibits: a skillfully carved piece of jade shaped like a cabbage with two grasshoppers hiding in its leaves, a meat-shaped stone, and a bronze bell specially made for King Li of Zhou. • The building is really ugly, put the Imperial collection of Ming and Qing in this kind of architecture exhibition, do not know what to say. Taipei Imperial Palace Porcelain and calligraphy standard is very high, but put these national treasures ignore, unexpectedly take a jade cabbage so tacky things to do town museum treasure, it is really strange. The galleries are too small, and the exhibitions are mostly jewellery, the selected exhibits are not very good, calligraphy and painting remember only two exhibition hall, far from enough, Taiwan is too small, really can not fit the treasures of the Chinese 5,000 years, when also blowing Chinese culture in Taiwan, now go to China, in Taiwan to walk a circle, the so-called Chinese culture is so, There are some Taiwanese culture, Japanese colonial culture is very heavy.

  • Accessibility is somewhat falling off or if you must place a trip to Taipei, I think. If you lack a lot of beautiful artifacts and historic sense are fun to watch. When 18 years old free, 18-year-old students in international masked much more than get student discount you may also note that. I have heard the audio guide and give Taiwan dollars 150, and worth every penny. It is recommended that

  • This museum is one of the best 4 in the world, houses over 700,000 collection, impossible to see it in a few hours, so chose what you are interested in and visit that, I saw the ceramic collection, it...  more »

  • This place is huge. Recommend to take a guided tour either through travel agents or online at least a week in advance. If unable to book a guided tour, at least get a self-guide. Always with lots of people 2000+ at any given time. To get to the Museum, take the Route No "Red 3" that will take you right at the entrance. Admission is charged on adults only (kids are free). Re entry is possible. All bags are required to be put to locker for NT$10. For children, must visit the Children Centre on B1 before paid entrance.
  • Great selections of Chinese arts and antiques. Saw the meat-shaped stone it was very unique!! The national palace museum has the largest selection of Ru-ware, they were beautiful! Visited the museum in the afternoon until it closes at 6:30, there were some groups of foreign visitor groups, but overall not too crowded. They often have detailed information about the items displayed, really helped me to understand more about the arts and the background history. A must-visit when you come to Taiwan!
  • A must visit when in Taipei. Huge... and I mean HUGE collection of amazing artefacts of Chinese cultural history. The walk was almost too much for me, even though I love museums... which is why I probably should avoid going on a weekend. The only thing that sucks is the food selection... which to me is a lost opportunity for them to setup the ultimate showcase the Chinese culinary history. Here's hoping someone will take this suggestion in...
  • Great museum for Chinese art and history, the temporary exhibition are often really interesting too. The price of the ticket isn't cheap (350 ntd for one adult), but really worth it as you can stay as long as you want, and can easily spend 4/5 hours in the museum. BRING A COAT, the AC is often unnecessary cold. My favorite part was the one about the evolution of Chinese characters through history, and what supported these changes. I'm also a big "map-nerd" (does that exists?) and loved the part full of old maps.
  • This place has an endless collection of Chinese artifacts (the best in the world). Recommend spending the whole day here. There's also an annex but it hold exhibitions from abroad (mummies from British Museum). It's easily accessible by bus. A must visit place for anyone travelling.
