Yeh Liu Geo Park, Xinbei

4.3
#1 of 49 in Parks in Xinbei
Stretching some 1,700 m (5,577 ft) into the ocean, Yeh Liu Geo Park serves as a natural exhibition area for some of the strangest tent rock formations in the world. Dotted with hoodoo stones, the promontory offers fantastic views of the distinctive geological formations created in Miocene, which pushed the Dalian Mountains out of the sea. Marvel at the rocky Queen’s Head, the rock resembling a profile of Elizabeth II Queen of England, then check out Sea Candles, Fairy’s Shoe, or Ginger Rock. You can have fun concocting your own name for some of the shapes while walking through a forest of tall mushroom-shaped rocks. This bizarre Martian-like landscape can be reached by bus 90 minutes from West Taipei station. • Wrap the car up to nine copies of a scene. There's no special interest in this Earth park, but it's been changed. Park along the sea, walk all the way to feel the sea wind to write, and of course, see the two famous queen is also very distinctive!

  • Nice park to come and see fascinating rocks of various shapes and sizes, the result of natural geographical processes. Can get quite crowded, but definitely worth the visit. Waves are nice, rocks are ...  more »
  • Individually are only going to take a taxi or bus tours are good, I guess. Taiwan is very inconsistent in the rain, umbrellas, weather, don't. The head of the Queen's pictures in a line which might reverse the left and right to take pictures in the back of the blah blah

  • Absolutely breathtaking! Such an unique place that I would like to visit again when the weather is better! There were many friendly staff giving us directions, and keeping people from touching the rocks. You can see fossils everywhere on the ground! If you want to do some hiking, there's a trail which takes about 20~30 minutes one way. It leads you to a light house kind of thing. The view is very nice. Be aware of the wind though, it can get real windy there. Bring another layer just in case!
  • Please do not miss this! Astounding natural formations and a great family experience. Educational. Something for everyone across age and cultures. My 12, 14 and 15 year olds were safe to walk around and experience on their own.. My 10 year old boy was excited about every fossil and the water crashing through the rock walls. My mother in law preferred to sit and take in the moment while people-watching and relaxing. I was happy to see them all smiling at the same time - a rare occurrence that parents of multiple children would understand! The staff was helpful and clearly have a sense of purpose and pride. Despite the crowds and the wait to take pictures (and sometimes rude individuals trying to push their way through!), we enjoyed ourselves beyond expectation. My wish is that every tourist appreciates the breadth of the geological features and its history. It was very well-worth the trip.
  • Tip from our guide: park is sectioned into thirds. Queen's head and most of the interesting parts are in the middle third. Furthest third is inaccessible. So, to save time, head straight to the middle third. Slow, long queue if you want to take a picture of the iconic Queen's head from the right angle. Fierce guard at head of queue. Scenic waterline views everywhere. Fake Queen's head is at the first third, nearest entrance. Tourist stamps available at the visitor information centre before you enter.
  • Many cool rock formations. Do bring along jackets as the park is next to the sea and the sea breeze can get very chilly. Also, be prepared to queue for a long time just to take a picture with the iconic queens head rock formation. I would also recommend eating at the nearby seafood restaurants for lunch.
  • The Yehliu Geopark is a must see for tourists who are into nature. This place could give you a unique experience of looking at different rock formations. If you are a creative person, you may take selfies and pictures that will allow you to extend or imitate the shapes of the rock formations. With the popular Queen's Head rock formation and different rock figures, you will surely enjoy this experience. The place is about an hour and 30 minutes travel from Taipei City and you may spend half day in this place. Activities are limited tho and may be dragging for some people.

Where to stay in Xinbei

Far more accommodations lie in adjacent Taipei than in Xinbei. That said, if you're keen to stay in Xinbei, you won't have any problems finding a place to sleep. Banqiao district offers the largest collection of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels in the new city, particularly around Fuzhong station. A similar variety, but greater number, of accommodations can be found in Taipei's central district, with a vast array of hotels great and small, guesthouses, hostels, and boutiques available to the east of the Tamsui River.
