Built in the 1950s to control river runoff and aid hydroelectric generation, Kayrakkum Reservoir now serves as a popular vacation destination for locals and tourists alike. Often referred to as the "Tajik Sea," this vast lake has created its own ecosystem and now teems with numerous fish species and aquatic plants. The reservoir also acts as an important stopover point for migratory birds, making it a classified Important Bird Area.   • We drove down to this large reservoir. It was too late in the season for swimming or water sports so everything was rather quiet. It is now called the Tajik Sea.  more »
