Khao Mai Kaew Cave, Ko Lanta

#4 of 8 in Nature in Ko Lanta
Put on a headlamp and prepare for an adventurous trek through Khao Mai Kaew Cave. The cave itself is dark, muddy, and slippery, and you'll be climbing ladders, pushing and crawling through small openings, walking across bamboo bridges, and encountering bats, large cave spiders, frogs, and other critters along the way. Once inside the cave, reward yourself with a swim in the cave pools, among the stalactite and stalagmite formations. Note that this is not for the faint of heart--even the climb to the cave can be quite demanding. Wear older clothes and comfortable shoes. • A nice walk in the jungle to arrive at the entrance of the cave that sets the tone of the start ... Very physical, slippery and quite acrobatic, but really nice in the end. The guide won't pollute you with too much explanation, we haven't heard it until the end.

  • We were really immersed in an underground world, very beautiful but not accessible to all. As soon as you went downhill, the air was getting scarcer and it was really hot. We had been well warned at the entrance so no surprise. Remember to take water because the climb to the cave is steep and inside, in case of a blow, it can be used! The end ends flat on the stomach about 1 m. Not suitable for claustrophobic people.

  • Very nice adventure of 2hours. Worth the 300. Forced to go with a guide. Tour start every 30min. Better to go with shoes. A bit slippery. Ok for clostrophobic, the cave is big enough.
  • Adventurous scramble up to impressive caves Visited 22nd Jan 2019. Took the guide and headtorch, well worth it, wouldn't have found cave ourselves (the Google Pin is not correctly placed). The route up is very fun, scramble over waterfalls and up bamboo ladders - glad it was dry season ! Descend through a large scree down bamboo ladders into tall chambers and rifts, along ancient water-passages, across bamboo bridges not for the faint-hearted and finally out lower down the same scree, past a side chamber with hundreds of bats. Some huge cave spiders along the way and a short muddy crawl for a couple of metres. Came down a gentler path along ridges and through both new and old rubber plantations, a little steep in places but a pleasing loop. Great fun. Shame our guide could speak so little English - there are four guides working here so you may be luckier. Well worth the price.
