Visit Zojo-ji Temple and Kanda Myojin for their historical value. Get some cultural insight at Yanaka and Senso-ji Temple. There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Asakusa Shrine, contemplate the long history of 上野東照宮 Toshogu Shrine, and admire the masterpieces at Tokyo National Museum.

Melbourne, Australia to Tokyo is an approximately 14-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of train and flight. Start off your visit on the 26th (Tue): steep yourself in history at Tofuku-ji Temple, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then take a stroll through Gion. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 27th (Wed): step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. January in Kyoto sees daily highs of 10°C and lows of 1°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Wed) early enough to travel to Miyakojima.

Popular historic sites such as Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse and Ninto zeiseki are in your itinerary. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Sunayama Beach and Painagama Beach. Next up on the itinerary: take in the views from Irabu Ohashi, enjoy the sand and surf at Shigira Beach, stroll the grounds of Nakasone Toyumya Tomb, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Miyako Shrine.

You can do a combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Miyakojima in 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or do a combination of bus and flight. Traveling from Kyoto in January, things will get warmer in Miyakojima: highs are around 24°C and lows about 19°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 29th (Fri) so you can travel to Ishigaki.
