Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Hobart: Pulpit Rock Lookout (in New Norfolk) and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (in Brighton). There's still lots to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Wellington, see the interesting displays at Mawson's Hut Replica Museum, explore the world behind art at Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), and take in nature's colorful creations at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

Sydney to Hobart is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Expect little chillier temperatures when traveling from Sydney in December; daily highs in Hobart reach 24°C and lows reach 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Tue) to allow time to drive to Port Arthur.
