A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Onuma Park Walking Path and Motomachi Catholic Church. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Hakodate Orthodox Church and Old British Consulate of Hakodate. When in Hakodate, make a side trip to see Trappist Monasteries in Hokuto, approximately 42 minutes away. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Hakodate Bugyosho, wander the streets of Motomachi, test the waters at a local thermal spa, and take an in-depth tour of Kitajima Saburo Memorial Museum.

Getting from Hakodate to Noboribetsu by car takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: take a train. In July, daily temperatures in Noboribetsu can reach 26°C, while at night they dip to 19°C. On the 24th (Tue), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Abashiri.

A coastal town with a smattering of things to do, Abashiri has an interesting history and arresting natural scenery.
Kick off your visit on the 25th (Wed): contemplate the long history of Abashiri Prison Museum, see the interesting displays at Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, take an in-depth tour of Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples, then take an in-depth tour of Moyoro Kaizuka-kan, and finally visit a coastal fixture at Cape Notoro.

Getting from Noboribetsu to Abashiri by combination of train, bus, and flight takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a train. July in Abashiri sees daily highs of 28°C and lows of 21°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Thu) early enough to go by car to Kushiro.

Kushiro first developed as an industrial hub thanks to its relatively ice-free harbor, and has since also become known as a transport hub for journeys to the east of the island.
Start off your visit on the 26th (Thu): look for all kinds of wild species at Kushiro City Red-crowned Crane Natural Park and then appreciate the extensive heritage of Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory Boardwalk.

You can drive from Abashiri to Kushiro in 2.5 hours. Another option is to take a train. Traveling from Abashiri in July, expect Kushiro to be slightly colder, temps between 24°C and 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 27th (Fri) to allow enough time to drive to Furano.

Situated in the center of the island, Furano has become known for its idyllic rural landscape, and the drastic changes it experiences as seasons shift.
On the 27th (Fri), stop by Furano Cheese Craft Center, stop by Furano Marche, and then look for gifts at Campana Rokkatei. On your second day here, learn about winemaking at Furano Budogaoka Park, stroll through Farm Tomita, then view the masterpieces at Takushinkan, and finally take a memorable drive along Patchwork no Michi.

You can drive from Kushiro to Furano in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Kushiro in July, with highs in Furano at 30°C and lows at 21°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Sun) early enough to drive to Sapporo.
