Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Tokyo National Museum and The Hakone Open-Air Museum. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Ginza and Takeshita Street. Get out of town with these interesting Tokyo side-trips: Ghibli Museum Mitaka (in Mitaka) and Kōtoku-in (in Kamakura). There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Senso-ji Temple, take a stroll through Odaiba District, don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine, and take in nature's colorful creations at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple for their historical value. Do some cultural sightseeing at Kinkaku-ji and Sanjusangendo Temple. Change things up with a short trip to Todai-ji Temple in Nara (about 1 hour away). There's still lots to do: stop by Arashiyama, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ginkakuji Temple, make a trip to Gion, and step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle.

Getting from Tokyo to Kyoto by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: fly; or drive. In April, daytime highs in Kyoto are 67°F, while nighttime lows are 50°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 23rd (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Osaka.

Osaka is just a stone's throw from Kyoto. In April, daily temperatures in Osaka can reach 68°F, while at night they dip to 51°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Tue) to allow enough time to travel back home.
