Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Escape the urban bustle at Mt. Wakakusa and Mt. Koya. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Koyasan Okunoin and Muroji Temple. Explore Osaka's surroundings by going to Sakurai (Omiwa Shrine & Hase-dera Temple), Kashihara Jingu (in Kashihara) and Koya-cho (Koyasan Danjo Garan & Kongobu-ji Temple). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Nishinomiya Shrine, steep yourself in history at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, and wander the streets of Dotombori District.
