Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Head to Ginza and Kimono Mefor plenty of shopping. Get a sense of the local culture at Tokyo National Museum and Takeshita Street. There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sensō-ji, take some stellar pictures from Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, examine the collection at Edo-Tokyo Museum, and take a stroll through Odaiba.

Auckland, New Zealand to Tokyo is an approximately 15-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of bus and flight. The time zone changes from New Zealand Standard Time to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a -3 hour difference. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Auckland in May: highs in Tokyo hover around 28°C, while lows dip to 19°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Tue) to allow enough time to travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Tokugawa Art Museum and Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan. Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji for their historical value. There's lots more to do: don't miss a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, explore the world behind art at Hosomi Museum, shop like a local with Nishiki Market Shopping District, and wander the streets of Gion.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. In May in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 29°C during the day and 17°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Osaka.

Shop till you drop at Dotonbori and Jikko Cutlery. Do some cultural sightseeing at Himeji Castle and Osaka Castle. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Japan Toy Museum (in Himeji), Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum (in Higashinada) and Nara (Nara Park & Todaiji Temple Cultural Center). Osaka is just a stone's throw from Kyoto. In May, daytime highs in Osaka are 29°C, while nighttime lows are 18°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 26th (Tue) early enough to travel to Hakone-machi.

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
On the 27th (Wed), admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, explore the activities along Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), then steep yourself in history at Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, and finally get engrossed in the history at Hakone Shrine Homotsuden.

Traveling by flight from Osaka to Hakone-machi takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Expect slightly colder weather when traveling from Osaka in May: highs in Hakone-machi hover around 21°C, while lows dip to 19°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 28th (Thu) so you can travel back home.
