The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Nijo Castle and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Step out of the city life by going to Kamogawa River and Miyama Town Nature Cultural Village. Step out of Kyoto with an excursion to Miho Museum in Koka--about 1 hour away. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, stop by Fuuka-Kimono, and take some stellar pictures from Mt. Kurama.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. In April in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 67°F during the day and 50°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Sun) to allow enough time to take a train to Hiroshima.
