Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Shop till you drop at Ginza and Harajuku Takeshita-dori. Step off the beaten path and head to Minato Mirai 21 and Ikspiari. And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Senso-ji Temple, make a trip to Meiji Jingu Shrine, shop like a local with Omotesando, and wander the streets of Odaiba.

Los Angeles, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 15.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of flight and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 17 hours traveling from Los Angeles to Tokyo. Traveling from Los Angeles in December, expect Tokyo to be slightly colder, temps between 54°F and 39°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Thu) to allow time to travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Your inner history buff will appreciate Nijo Castle and Kinkaku-ji. And it doesn't end there: steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, take a stroll through Gion, and don't miss a visit to Eikando Zenrinji Temple.

Traveling by train from Tokyo to Kyoto takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. In December, plan for daily highs up to 52°F, and evening lows to 39°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Sun) so you can travel to Naniwa.

Getting from Kyoto to Naniwa by car takes about 1.5 hours. In December, daily temperatures in Naniwa can reach 52°F, while at night they dip to 42°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Mon) so you can travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Visiting Yonehara Beach and Cape Hirakubozaki will get you outdoors. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Kondoi Beach and Canyoning & Rappelling Tours. Go for a jaunt from Ishigaki to Iriomote-jima to see Nakano Beach about 1h 20 min away. There's lots more to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Kaiji Beach, stop by Yurateiku Market, and take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory.
