The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple will appeal to history buffs. Kinkaku-ji and Gion are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Kyoto: Dotombori District (in Dotombori) and Todai-ji Temple (in Nara). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, and step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle.

Miyakojima
A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Step out of the city life by going to Aragusuku Beach and Yabiji. Step off the beaten path and head to Toguchi no Hama and Scuba & Snorkeling. There's still lots to do: get outside with Sunayama Beach, snap pictures at Kurima Bridge, don't miss a visit to Ikema Ohashi Bridge, and step off the mainland to explore Irabu-jima Island.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Cape Hirakubozaki and Island Countryside Settlement. Escape the urban bustle at Kondoi Beach and Scuba & Snorkeling.
