With the largest international airport on the island, Chitose serves for most visitors as a way in or a way out, rather than a destination in itself.
Get outdoors at The North Country Golf Club and Lake Shikotsu. Royce' Chocolate World and Nibutani Ainu Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. When in Chitose, make a side trip to see Ushigoya no Ice in Yuni-cho, approximately Yuni-cho away. There's lots more to do: relax and rejuvenate at some of the best spas, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium, buy something for everyone on your list at Chitose Outlet Mall Rera, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Chitose Shrine.

Sapporo Clock Tower and Hokkaido Jingu are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Head to Sapporo Underground Shopping Centre Aurora Town and Tanukikoji Shopping Streetfor some retail therapy. Change things up with these side-trips from Sapporo: Otaru (Shioya Beach & Otaru Canal), Yoichi-cho (Yoichi Wine Brewery & Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery) and Iwanaicho Folk Museum (in Iwanai-cho). Shop till you drop at Takushinkan and Furano Marche. Do some cultural sightseeing at Furabi and Snow Crystal Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Asahikawa side-trips: Kamifurano-cho (Onsen Resorts & Roller Coaster Road), Biei-cho (Shirahige Falls, Shirogane Blue Pond, &more) and Furano (Furano Wine Factory & Furano Ski Resort). There's lots more to do: get to know the resident critters at Asahiyama Zoo, examine the collection at Otokoyama Sakezukuri Museum, browse the different shops at AEON MALL Asahikawa Ekimae, and don't miss a visit to Asahikawa Station.
