As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Ponta Delgada: Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego (in Nordeste), Sete Cidades (Vista do Rei Miradouro & Lagoa Verde / Lagoa das Sete Cidades) and Furnas (Church of Nossa Senhora da Alegria, Poca Da Dona Beija, &more). There's much more to do: take in the dramatic natural features at Caldeira das Sete Cidades, contemplate the waterfront views at Furnas, tour the pleasant surroundings at Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre, and pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja do Santo Cristo.

Green Island
Known as The Green Island, Sao Miguel is the largest of the nine islands of Azores and is considered a natural paradise. These islands were discovered in the 15th century and, according to myth, are reputed to be part of the lost empire of Atlantis. Sao Miguel's most prominent feature is a set of twin lakes, one of which is blue and the other green. Visitors also enjoy the island's park, golf courses, beaches, mountains, marina, and ocean views. Stop for a look at the city's monuments and architecture, and experience the cobbled streets lined with a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and cafes.
