The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Toji and Yasaka Shrine. Your inner history buff will appreciate Nijo Castle and Sanjusangendo Temple. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Osaka (Dotonbori & Osaka Castle). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and take a stroll through Gion.

Take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. In April in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 11°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Thu) to allow time to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Kick off your visit on the 19th (Fri): kick back and relax at Yonehara Beach, then get outside with Cape Hirakubozaki, and then enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory. On the 20th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, then stop by Pinion Direct Shop, and then stroll through Kondoi Beach.

You can do a combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Ishigaki in 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. In April, Ishigaki is somewhat warmer than Kyoto - with highs of 30°C and lows of 24°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Sat) to allow time to ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.
