Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Start off your visit on the 17th (Fri): examine the collection at Edo-Tokyo Museum. Here are some ideas for day two: get a taste of the local shopping with Ginza and then wander the streets of Odaiba.

Washington DC, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 17.5-hour combination of subway, bus, and flight. You can also fly; or do a combination of train and flight. You'll lose 14 hours traveling from Washington DC to Tokyo due to the time zone difference. In July in Tokyo, expect temperatures between 87°F during the day and 74°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Sun) so you can travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Nijo Castle and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Explore hidden gems such as Tofuku-ji Temple and Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki). You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Osaka (Dotonbori & Osaka Castle). Next up on the itinerary: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, and wander the streets of Gion.

Take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. In July, plan for daily highs up to 89°F, and evening lows to 76°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 22nd (Wed) early enough to travel to Ishigaki.

Visiting Yonehara Beach and Kondoi Beach will get you outdoors. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Cape Hirakubozaki and Stand-Up Paddleboarding. And it doesn't end there: paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour, look for gifts at Pinion Direct Shop, take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, and explore the gorgeous colors at Kabira Ishizaki Manta Scramble.

You can do a combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Ishigaki in 6 hours. Another option is to fly. Expect a bit warmer evenings in Ishigaki when traveling from Kyoto in July, with lows around 82°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Sat) so you can ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.
