Capital of the Inca Empire for three centuries, World Heritage-listed Cusco is now a major tourist destination, drawing nearly 2 million annual tourists with its well-preserved colonial architecture and proximity to Machu Picchu.
Step off the beaten path and head to Sacred Valley of the Incas and Spas. There's still lots to do: explore the striking landscape at Cerro Colorado Vinicunca, take a pleasant ride with a tour on horseback, delve into the distant past at Sacsayhuaman, and relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour.

Bogota, Colombia to Cusco is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. In December, daily temperatures in Cusco can reach 24°C, while at night they dip to 9°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Thu) to allow time to travel to Machu Picchu.

A symbol of the Incan civilization, the abandoned city of Machu Picchu represents a must-see on a Peru vacation.
On the 20th (Fri), whizz through the canopy at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks, look for gifts at Artesanias, thenpause for some serene contemplation at Iglesia Virgen Del Carmen, and finally catch some excitement at Samay Spa. Here are some ideas for day two: tour the pleasant surroundings at Jardin Botanico en Machu Pichu, delve into the distant past at Winay Wayna, and then take in the awesome beauty at Phutuq K'usi.

You can do a combination of bus and train from Cusco to Machu Picchu in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. On the 22nd (Sun), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Puno.

Hugging the western tip of Lake Titicaca, Puno serves as a melting pot of indigenous and imported cultures, and makes a great base for explorations around the region.
Step off the beaten path and head to Speed Boats Tours and Lake Umayo. When in Puno, make a side trip to see Iglesia Apostol Santiago in Lampa, approximately Lampa away. Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Titicaca, contemplate the long history of Arco Deustua, head off the coast to Taquile Island, and take some stellar pictures from Mirador Ing. You can fly from Machu Picchu to Puno in 7.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 22°C in December, and nighttime lows around 3°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Wed) to allow time to drive to Arequipa.

A port town largely devoted to tourism, Paracas serves as a popular starting point for exploration of Peru's south coast.
Kick off your visit on the 28th (Sat): kick back and relax at Playa El Raspon, enjoy the sand and surf at Supay Beach, and then fly like a bird with a parasailing or paragliding tour. Keep things going the next day: step off the mainland to explore Islas Ballestas, thentake in the exciting artwork at Pukasoncco, Arte Precolombino., and then kick back and relax at Playa Mendieta.

Founded in 1535 by Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, Lima represents an interesting blend of modern attractions and preserved colonial architecture, much of it clustered in the World Heritage-listed city center.
On the 30th (Mon), explore the galleries of Galeria Indigo and then get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. On the 31st (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: steep yourself in history at Basilica y Monasterio de Santo Domingo and then step off the mainland to explore Palomino.
