Prepare for much colder weather when traveling from Sydney in December: high temperatures in Hiroshima hover around 13°C and lows are around 4°C. Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Sat): take in nature's colorful creations at Sakuya Konohanakan, take a stroll through Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, and then take a stroll through Dotombori District. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: get a taste of the local shopping with Hankyu Umeda Honten and then step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle.

Getting from Hiroshima to Osaka by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of train and flight. January in Osaka sees daily highs of 10°C and lows of 1°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Sun) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Shimogamo Jinja and Nishi Honganji. For shopping fun, head to Kyoto Station Building or Itoju Honten. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, take a stroll through Arashiyama, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, and take in the exciting artwork at Nowaki.

You can take a train from Osaka to Kyoto in 1.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. In January, daytime highs in Kyoto are 10°C, while nighttime lows are 1°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 7th (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Shizuoka.

With its upmarket shopping districts and scenic coastal landscape, Shizuoka stands as the main urban area of a province often referred to as Japan's riviera.
Get a sense of the local culture at Satta-toge Pass and Shizuoka Sengen Shrine. Step off the beaten path and head to Nature & Wildlife Tours and Shinshizuoka Cenova. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Shizuoka: Marine Station (in Yaizu), Sumatakyo Onsen (in Kawanehon-cho) and Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine (in Fujinomiya). Take a train from Kyoto to Shizuoka in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Kyoto in January since evenings lows in Shizuoka dip to 5°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sun) so you can take a train to Tokyo.

Traveling by train from Shizuoka to Tokyo takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Shizuoka in January, expect a bit cooler with lows of 1°C in Tokyo. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 16th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
