Grapple with history and appreciate modernity in Hiroshima, a city known around the world for its tragic past and inspiring rebirth.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Mitaki Temple, Monokoto Store and Shukkei-en Garden. Get some historical perspective at Itsukushima Shrine Torii and Itsukushima Shrine. Sydney, Australia to Hiroshima is an approximately 16.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of flight and bus. The time zone difference when traveling from Sydney to Hiroshima is minus 1 hour. Traveling from Sydney in December, things will get colder in Hiroshima: highs are around 13°C and lows about 4°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) so you can catch the train to Kita.

A Kita holiday offers a great deal of varied attractions that cater to all kinds of modern urban explorers.
On the 2nd (Thu), take in nature's colorful creations at Sakuya Konohanakan, then wander the streets of Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, and then wander the streets of Dotonbori. Keep things going the next day: shop like a local with Hankyu Umeda Main Store and then explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle.

Traveling by train from Hiroshima to Kita takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Expect a daytime high around 10°C in January, and nighttime lows around 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Fri) to allow time to take a train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some historical perspective at Shimogamo Jinja and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Get a sense of the local culture at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Step out of Kyoto to go to Hikone and see Itoju Honten, which is approximately 1h 35 min away. Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Nishi Honganji, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, and view the masterpieces at Nowaki.

With its upmarket shopping districts and scenic coastal landscape, Shizuoka stands as the main urban area of a province often referred to as Japan's riviera.
Get a sense of the local culture at Satta-toge Pass and Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Marine Station and Shinshizuoka Cenova. Get out of town with these interesting Shizuoka side-trips: Sumatakyo Onsen (in Kawanehon-cho) and Nature & Wildlife Tours (in Fuji). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Shizuoka Sengen Jinja Shrine and make a trip to Okuoikojo Station.

Take a train from Kyoto to Shizuoka in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Kyoto in January, expect somewhat warmer with lows of 5°C in Shizuoka. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Fri) to allow enough time to travel to Tokyo.

Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Head to Ginza Itoya Hontren and Ginzafor plenty of shopping. Your inner history buff will appreciate Samukawa Shrine and Naritasan Omote Sando. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Tokyo: Oyama Afuri Shrine (in Isehara), Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine (in Omiya) and Mitsumine Shrine (in Chichibu). There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Ueno, visit Yanaka, steep yourself in history at Kencho-ji Temple, and don't miss a visit to Hozomon.
