A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Escape the urban bustle at Yonaha Maehama Beach and Kayaking & Canoeing. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Yabiji and Scuba & Snorkeling. There's much more to do: get outside with Aragusuku Beach, snap pictures at Irabu Ohashi, step off the mainland to explore Irabu-jima Island, and visit a coastal fixture at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse.

Calgary, Canada to Miyakojima is an approximately 19-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight. You'll lose 16 hours traveling from Calgary to Miyakojima due to the time zone difference. Traveling from Calgary in September, expect Miyakojima to be warmer, temps between 36°C and 30°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Sat) early enough to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Start off your visit on the 6th (Sun): glide peacefully along the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, enjoy the sea views from Cape Hirakubozaki, then Head underground at Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave, and finally kick back and relax at Kondoi Beach. Keep things going the next day: get interesting insight from Tours, then get outside with Yonehara Beach, and then discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour.

You can fly from Miyakojima to Ishigaki in 2 hours. In September in Ishigaki, expect temperatures between 37°C during the day and 30°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 7th (Mon) so you can catch the ferry to Iriomote-jima.

Onna-son

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.
Okinawa Peace Memorial Park and Nakijin Castle Ruins are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Escape the urban bustle at Scuba & Snorkeling and Daisekirinzan. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Onna-son: Katsuren Castle Ruins (in Uruma), Motobu-cho (Bise no Fukugi Tree Road & Okichan Theater) and Nakagusuku Castle Ruins (in Kitanakagusuku-son). There's still lots to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Zakimi Castle Ruins, stop by Onna Station Nakayukui Market, contemplate the long history of Sefa-Utaki, and get great views at Cape Hedo.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Kyoto to go to Osaka and see Osaka Castle, which is approximately 1h 10 min away.
