The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Museum-lovers will get to explore Todaiji Temple Cultural Center and Gallery of Kyoto Traditional Arts & Crafts. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Nara (Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga Grand Shrine, &more). There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, stop by Gion, contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, and go for a walk through Arashiyama.

There's much more to do: find something for the whole family at Universal Studios Japan, laugh and play at SpaWorld, learn something new at Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street, and admire the landmark architecture of Kuchu Teien Observatory.
