Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Visit Tatadohama Beach and Shirahama Beach for some beach relaxation. Do your shopping at Pola Museum of Art and Hiraiseika Honten. Skiing enthusiasts traveling in Japan should consider a trip to Hakuba-mura: tucked away in the Northern Alps, this village hosted several competitions during the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Nozawa Onsen and Hokusai-kan. Do some cultural sightseeing at Hakuba and Ganshoin Temple. Venture out of the city with trips to Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort (in Nozawaonsen-mura), Togakushi Shrine Okusha (in Nagano) and Kaichi Gakko Primary School (in Matsumoto). There's still lots to do: fly down the slopes at Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park, get outside with Shigakogen Sun Valley Ski Area, take in nature's colorful creations at Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort / Alpine Garden, and take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Happoone.

Traveling by car from Hakone-machi to Hakuba-mura takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and train; or take a train. Traveling from Hakone-machi in December, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Hakuba-mura, with lows of 0°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 30th (Mon) so you can go by car to Kanazawa.

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Seibu Trail and Yakusugi Land. Step out of the city life by going to Nagata Inakahama and Shiratani Unsuikyo Valley. Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Get some cultural insight at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse and Tomori no Amai. Take a break from the city and head to Toguchi no Hama and Scuba & Snorkeling.
