Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
O Navio Gil Eannes and Porto Augusto's are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Visit Se de Braga and Santuario de Santa Luzia for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Porto: Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes), Bom Jesus do Monte (in Braga) and Convento de Cristo (in Tomar). There's much more to do: learn about winemaking at Taylor's Port, get into the urban bustle at Palacio da Bolsa, make a trip to Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco.

As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Centro de Monitorizacao e Investigacao das Furnas and Maria dos Anjos Melo House Museum. Head to Azorean Gift Shop and Mercado da Gracafor plenty of shopping. Get out of town with these interesting Ponta Delgada side-trips: Furnas (Caldeiras Vulcânicas, Parque Terra Nostra, &more) and Sao Nicolau Church (in Sete Cidades).
