Kushiro first developed as an industrial hub thanks to its relatively ice-free harbor, and has since also become known as a transport hub for journeys to the east of the island.
Akan International Crane Centre has been added to your itinerary. Kick off your visit on the 25th (Sat): snap pictures at Nusamai Bridge, thenlook for all kinds of wild species at Akan International Crane Centre, thenexplore the activities along Akan Lake, and finally look for gifts at Kushiro Fisherman's Wharf Moo. On your second day here, get to know the resident critters at Kushiro City Tanchozuru Nature Park, take in panoramic vistas at Kushiro Marsh Observatory, get to know the fascinating history of Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory Boardwalk, enjoy breathtaking views from Kottaro Swamp Observatory, thentake in panoramic vistas at Hosooka Observation, and finally get engrossed in the history at Hokuto Ancient Ruin Museum.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiports are New Chitose Airport and Asahikawa Airport. In January, plan for daily highs up to 31°F, and evening lows to 14°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 26th (Sun) so you can go by car to Otaru.

The port city of Otaru has long attracted domestic visitors, drawn in by the city's many historic buildings, and has started to garner international attention, too.
On the 27th (Mon), hit the slopes at Niseko Hanazono Resort and then don't miss a visit to JR Otaru Station. On your second day here, stroll around Fukidashi Park and then fly down the slopes at Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu Ski Place.

Getting from Kushiro to Otaru by car takes about 4 hours. Other options: fly; or take a train. Traveling from Kushiro in January, Otaru is somewhat warmer at night with lows of 22°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 29th (Wed) to allow time for the car ride back home.
