Kushiro first developed as an industrial hub thanks to its relatively ice-free harbor, and has since also become known as a transport hub for journeys to the east of the island.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Akan International Crane Centre. On the 25th (Sat), take in the views from Nusamai Bridge, then look for all kinds of wild species at Akan International Crane Centre, then contemplate the waterfront views at Akan Lake, and finally look for gifts at Kushiro Fisherman's Wharf Moo. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 26th (Sun): get to know the resident critters at Kushiro City Tanchozuru Nature Park, take in panoramic vistas at Kushiro Marsh Observatory, get to know the fascinating history of Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory Boardwalk, then take in panoramic vistas at Kottaro Swamp Observatory, then enjoy breathtaking views from Hosooka Observation, and finally get engrossed in the history at Hokuto Ancient Ruin Museum.

The port city of Otaru has long attracted domestic visitors, drawn in by the city's many historic buildings, and has started to garner international attention, too.
Start off your visit on the 27th (Mon): hit the slopes at Niseko Hanazono Resort and then make a trip to JR Otaru Station. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 28th (Tue): walk around Fukidashi Park and then fly down the slopes at Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu Ski Place.

Traveling by car from Kushiro to Otaru takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or do a combination of flight and train. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Kushiro in January since evenings lows in Otaru dip to 22°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 29th (Wed) to allow time for the car ride back home.
