Known nationally as an industrial heartland, Nagoya boasts a far more cosmopolitan and cultural core than its reputation would lead you to believe.
On the 23rd (Fri), examine the collection at Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Atsuta Jingu Shrine, see the interesting displays at SCMAGLEV and Railway Park, then examine the collection at Toyota Automobile Museum, and finally wander the streets of Sakae.

Set amid quintessentially Japanese landscape, Shirakawa-mura consists of 16 quaint villages, including a historic village of farm houses, now designated a World Heritage Site.
On the 24th (Sat), contemplate the long history of Okuzaemon, enjoy breathtaking views from Tenshukakau Observatory, make a trip to Suganuma Gassho Community, take a stroll through Gokayama, then make a trip to Ainokura Gassho Community, and finally appreciate the extensive heritage of Ainokura Kaiyu Hodo. On your second day here, contemplate the long history of Wada House, then steep yourself in history at Kanda house, then take an in-depth tour of Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen, and finally steep yourself in history at Shirakawago.

You can drive from Nagoya to Shirakawa-mura in 2.5 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or do a combination of train and taxi. In August in Shirakawa-mura, expect temperatures between 35°C during the day and 27°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Sun) early enough to drive to Kyoto.

Start off your visit on the 26th (Mon): appreciate the extensive heritage of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kodai-ji Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kennin-ji Temple, steep yourself in history at Tofuku-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Toji, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Eikando Zenrinji Temple.

You can drive from Shirakawa-mura to Kyoto in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and train; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Shirakawa-mura in August, you will find days in Kyoto are somewhat warmer (39°C), and nights are about the same (29°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 26th (Mon) early enough to take a train to Osaka.

On the 27th (Tue), admire the verdant scenery at Arima Onsen, then get a taste of the local shopping with Dotonbori, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Nigatsu-do Temple, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Toshodaiji Temple. On your second day here, steep yourself in history at Byodoin and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Mimurotoji Temple.
