Nearly 273,000 individual plants grow at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, representing over 13,000 different plant species from around the world. Founded in 1670, this garden plays an important role in a global network of institutions working to ensure that our planet’s biodiversity does not erode any further. Take a walk through this plant kingdom and explore the garden’s collection of orchids, tropical palms, cycads, ferns, and water lilies, to name just a few. The garden also includes a herbarium, housing over three million specimens of preserved plants. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh reviews
The gardens were quite far from the centre of the city, but were huge and very pleasant to be in. The gardens are free, and had a wide variety of plants, you could easily spend a whole afternoon here. more »
I'm sure in the height of summer when everything is out and blooming, this is a sensational place to visit. The infrastructure and set-up is very good, and I'm sure you can spend 3+ hours wandering..... more »
Very easy to loose half the day here. Really well maintained and surprisingly easy to navigate your way around the sections. A free attraction but donations are welcome. Rock garden was personally my favourite, but there is likely something for everyone. Glasshouse was closed when I went, likely due to refurbishment.
My wife and I had never been here before, so we didn't quite know what to expect when we went. We walked around on the trails for a couple of hours looking at the various trees and flowers. They also had a fully blooming flowering bushes section which I particularly liked (especially the orange flowering bush which is in full bloom right now!) The Queens Mother's memorial garden was an interesting piece of history. I suggest spending a bit of time reading some of the stones on the outside edge of it - just to see some of the names. The edible foods section was interesting, partly because as a Canadian you see a lot of familiar names. They also start growing them at various times so there was a lot of well developed produce there. The gift shop was actually really good. There were interesting books, trinkets, sweets, and seeds all for (what I considered) reasonable prices. The shop people were also quite nice to deal with.
