Fort George, Inverness

#1 of 9 in Historic Sites in Inverness
Historic Site · Military Facility
Walk the walls of Fort George, admire the Georgian buildings and garrison chapel contained within, and browse the museums and dioramas which document its history. Completed in 1757 in response to the Jacobite rising of 1745, the vast fort remains virtually unchanged and still serves as an army garrison, though much of it is open to the public. The elongated star-shaped fort sits on a promontory, enclosing an area equivalent to five football fields. The main rampart offers commanding views of the surrounding coastline and of dolphins and other wildlife that which frequent the waters around it. After exploring the fortifications, stop for a drink and a bite to eat in the cafe. To visit Fort George on your trip to Inverness, use our Inverness trip itinerary planner.

  • Wow! Just Wow! We went there expecting to be able to while away a couple of hours, but were very pleased to note that you could easily spend a whole day there. As a working Army base, some areas are quite rightly off limits to the public, but don't let that put you off going. There is lots and lots to see and the ramparts of the Fort are an amazing feat of architecture and master craftsmanship too. Take the whole day to take a deep dive into the history of the British Army at its most pristine. We will be going back :-)
  • Absolutely amazing. Could have spent longer and will come again next time we visit. Kids really enjoyed it too. Audio guides are worth picking up and bring the experience to life. Much less crowded than other popular local attractions and dogs welcome which was a major selling point for us. Probably one of my favourite historic Scotland places to date.
