Wells Cathedral, Wells

4.8
Dating back to the 12th century, Wells Cathedral stands as a fine example of Gothic architecture. Take one of the daily tours to see the most significant details and to hear a colorful history of the building. If specific areas of the cathedral interest you, opt for one of the themed tours. Take one to the top of the tower, where you'll earn expansive views of Wells and the surrounding countryside if the weather's clear. Venture into the library, which contains many books from the 16th and 17th centuries. And view one of Britain's most significant arrays of stained-glass windows. However you choose to visit the cathedral, make sure you head to the north transept to watch knights joust on the 14th-century astronomical clock. Check the schedule of services before you visit, because some areas close when the congregation meets. Put Wells Cathedral and other Wells attractions into our Wells road trip app , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Beautiful building and surroundings. It is free but the entrance is guarded by staff asking for payment so not sure how it is supposedly free. Although we were happy to make a contribution.  more »

  • A sight to behold! Amazing architecture which is a true show of how they used to build things. A great place to reflect. Entry is a donation only but was very happy to pay to advised amount to help keep a piece of history alive! The clock is worth the wait to see the knights. A great visit if you like history!
  • Simply stunning building. I find it almost impossible to believe that this was built over 900 years ago and it is still standing today. We couldnt build this today if we tried. The internal scissor beams supporting the main tower are beautiful as well as an engineering triumph.
