Cannon Fort, Cat Ba

#10 of 75 in Things to do in Cat Ba
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Cannon Fort offers scenic views of a bay with tiny houses and rocking fishing boats, surrounded by rolling hills covered with lush greenery. The Japanese built tunnels and gun posts at the site during World War II, which were later used by the French during the Indochina War, and by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The top can be reached by car or scooter, or, if you're feeling fit, by hiking up a steep, narrow slope. Follow the marked paths through a labyrinth of underground tunnels, caves, and narrow passages, then walk the "U-tunnel" and see where the sleeping quarters were. The fort also features a small museum and a cafe with a terrace. Using our custom trip planner, Cat Ba attractions like Cannon Fort can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • As of today this place is officially closed. You can sneak in by paying taxi drivers extra, but don't expect much.Apart from the overview of the town, there isn't much.  more »
  • We visited on a grey day for something to do. 40,000 dong per person to visit and a long old walk until you get to the "main" part. We had a moped, luckily. Theres a few "attractions"that are from...  more »
  • The weather was quite terrible for the views, but it was an interesting bit of history. I wish there was more signage to explain the history and function. The one big sign near the entrance indicates everything is on a big loop but really 95% is up at the top and if you have a moped you can just take it all the way up once you pay at the gate. There are a couple of fun positions on the road on the way up, the first one has a small trail to the right that you can follow up to see another gun redoubt.
  • We walked up to Cannon Fort and took us 30 minutes to reach to the top. You need to pay for entry (40,000) which is relatively cheap. It will take you 10-15 minutes to get to the ticket booth and another 20 minutes to reach to the top! To get to the top, everything is uphill! Good a bit of history and amazing view! Would be better during sunset!
