Cape Byron Lighthouse
Siting on the most easterly point of the country's mainland, Cape Byron Lighthouse was constructed in 1901 and fully automated in 1989. The iconic white tower attracts nearly half a million visitors each year, offering commanding views of the ocean and the coast. Take a guided tour and learn more about shipwrecks at the museum below. Remember to bring a pair of binoculars to watch humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles. You can also stay overnight at the former lighthouse keeper's residence or one of the two cottages once occupied by assistant keepers. It’s a bit of a drive up the hill, but it’s well worth it. Lots of car parks however you have to pay just to park there which is why a lot of the locals walk up to the hill but I wouldn’t recommend it as it is a long way up. Beautiful views of the beach there which you can use binoculars to peer out with, however it needs gold coins (we didn’t use because it seemed old and might not work). There is also bathrooms, a cafe and a information and gift shop there which is nice but we didn’t check out. The lighthouse is wonderful but I don’t believe you can go inside. There is also a walking track which leads to different lookouts for the beach and a part where you can walk onto the beach. It is step to go down so you have to be careful on the way down. It’s a beautiful bush walk as well and you get to see some wildlife. I suggest bringing a water bottle as you can get dehydrated quite easily. The trek back up is the WORST (if you are unfit like me) you go down really quick but going back up is very difficult or as I said I’m probably just unfit. It’s a nice little trip and it seems the locals go there to exercise and look at the views. There are little rest areas on the tracks with information plates and benches. If you are lucky you might see some whales or dolphins. It gets very windy so bring a jacket or jumper as it gets quite cold.

We parked about halfway up the walking track and walked the rest of the way to the lighthouse. It isn't a very hard walk although there is a bit of an ascent which may be hard for some. Was overcast on the day we went but was still breathtaking and we were even treated to a huge pod of dolphins which I captured on video. 100% must visit this spot if visiting Byron as it is an incredible site to see!
