Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
Formerly a workhouse for female convicts in the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is now a museum listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Operational between 1828 and 1856, the factory was an important part of the forced migration of convicts and global developments associated with punishment and reform. The site demonstrates how Britain used penal transportation to expand its sphere of influence, as well as to punish female convicts. Guided tours include short dramatic performances presenting the story of the convicts and their guardians. With our international travel planner, Hobart attractions like Cascades Female Factory Historic Site can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

This was wonderful! The new entrance and interactive area is beautiful (although there is no coffee shop, be aware), and this site is so moving. Definitely book the guided tour, it really helps you understand the depth of the site, compared to the self guided audio option. And I also highly recommend doing the performance…it’s not *just* a performance, it’s you getting to meet a variety of characters from the Factory’s days of operation. 9.5 out of ten… half a mark off to the architect for not including coffee in the renovation lol. The rest of it, 11 out of ten!

Amazing bit of history at the Cascades Female Factory. The history and stories of this place are as interesting as they are confronting, but a site well worth visiting. Our tour guide was even a descendant of one of the women at the factory, which definitely added a more personal touch to the stories.
