Over 50,000 male convicts attended Hobart Convict Penitentiary Historic Site between 1831 and 1853. Today, the chapel is a protected historical site. The penitentiary's complex of buildings containing the chapel also includes courtrooms, tunnels, solitary cells, and a refractory. The gallows in the execution yard, where 32 prisoners were hanged, were restored in the 1980s using original scaffolding. Volunteers conduct guided tours around the complex. • I visited here several years ago with my husband and at the time 1.5yr old. The tour was awesome and worthwhile doing. We loved learning about this history of the penitentiary. The tour guide was really knowledgable and answered any additional questions we had. No problem having a young child on the tour as long as you're prepared to carry them when needed. Definitely recommend visiting.
  • This was great. Skye was our tour guide and was so knowledgeable and pleasant. Don’t miss this for a background to your history of Tasmania. Done Port Arthur and this was better. Well done to National Trust. Rug up as cold inside and film a bit long but great place to visit. Feel for those poor convicts. Thanks Skye.
