Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / Tasmania / Greater Hobart / Hobart / St. David's Cathedral
Designed by George F. Bodley, St. David's Cathedral is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of the prominent Victorian architect’s work. Constructed between 1868 and 1936 in the Gothic Revival architectural style, the cathedral features a distinctive arcaded entrance with large windows, buttressed turrets, and a square tower made of stone. Stained-glass windows depict the lives of saints, knights, kings, and numerous biblical figures. Along the walls small memorial plaques record the names of notable past members of the congregation. This historical building is located in the heart of the city and forms one of the most recognizable streetscapes in Australia. Visitors are welcome on Sundays at 8am or 10am for Holy Communion, and can also hear the choir sing at 10am. The church has ancient and beautiful architecture. I feel very peaceful sitting here praying.
Stunning historic building (and place of worship!) in Hobart City. The stained glass windows are very beautiful, there is a smaller chapel within the cathedral. A craft shop is presently in the left hand corner by the main entrance. A small museum is through a door on the right, with stone from other cathedrals in Britain dating from 12thC on (possibly some earlier) along the walls, a display of old flags. The interior is beautiful, intricate and awe inspiring.
