This was a very interesting experience and one i would recommend. It should be said that 'encounter' doesn't mean handling any of the animals, which is what i would think most people might expect...

A shadow of it's former self. The lunatics have taken over the asylum to be honest. I have been coming to the zoo since I was a toddler and used to love it. Now there are far more plants than animals and it is more like a botanical gardens than a zoo. We took our 3 yo there and I was shocked at what has been done to it. Before going I was talking it up to my partner who has not seen it before as how world class and great it was. The Lion enclosure used to be this open range area where lions freely moved around whilst visitors could walk over their open area via an enclosed bridge. That is now replaced by a small caged area with depressed looking lions just sitting there with no room to move. There used to be polar bears, black bears, pandas, other bears, but not anymore. The elephant enclosure was good but was heavily laid out with buildings and shops pretending to be in Indonesia. What was worse was what they did to the Australian Fauna enclosure, One used to be able to go into an open area and get close to the Wallaby's and Kangaroos, that has been replaced by tiny little cages with very depressed kangaroos who have no where to move freely as they used to. Whomever is in charge of destroying what used to be a world class institution needs to be given their marching orders. It is a waste of time and money to visit.

Great day out with the family! We went to the Melbourne Zoo this morning & thought it was fantastic! The exhibits are so well laid out, the scenery was fantastic. By far one of the best zoos we've been to. Will definitely come back.
