The West Coast Wilderness Railway operates a tourist steam train offering a range of full and half day journeys along a 35km stretch of track between Queenstown and Strahan on Tasmania's wild West Coast.

Step back in history and climb aboard a majestic steam train at Queenstown Station.

Established in the late 1890s to transport minerals from the mines at Queenstown to the port at Strahan, the railway passes through dense temperate rainforest and steep gorges, offering glimpses of Tasmania's rugged wilderness from the comfort of a warm carriage pulled by a heritage steam locomotive.

Journey deep into the heritage of the wild West Coast, where tales of resilience and triumph showcase the iconic local spirit.

Discover how the Feud of the Irishmen helped shape the rugged and isolated region.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a must do experience.

  • Seriously the best experience, I am so glad I went on this trip. We stayed in Strahan and went a cruise up the Gordon river the day before, Great. I don't know why anyone would say it was not good, maybe they didn't like old steam trains or trains in general. Then don't go on it in the first place!? The narration that was told while on board was really great. I asked for a transcript but it wasn't available. The views where great. Just get on it and Go.
  • Our trip was a wonderful way to spend the day. Food was lovely and the staff informative and very friendly. Would live a little map of where the train was going or stops with a little bit of information about the area. Well worth a visit
