Spiky Bridge, Swansea

A well-known local attraction, Spiky Bridge is a stone bridge with an interesting convict heritage. Built in the 1840s by prisoners from the Rocky Hills Probation Station on the eastern coast of Tasmania, the bridge’s name is derived from its distinctive parapets. Some sections of the bridge were strengthened during the 1920s, and the spikes were extended to prevent local cattle from falling over the sides. Built of dry stonework, the bridge also features stone buttresses and a central channel. An information board near the bridge tells visitors all about the convict workers responsible for its construction.
