Create an itinerary including Stift Nonnberg
Made famous thanks to the movie "The Sound of Music," Stift Nonnberg is both one of the area's oldest religious buildings and a symbol of the city. Visit the convent, founded in 714, and explore the grounds to see the living quarters and daily surroundings of the nuns who called it home. Within, you'll discover crypts, medieval frescoes, religious decorations, and a mix of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic. If you're a fan of the famous film, keep in mind that the woman known as Maria von Trapp once lived here, and her life later inspired the movie. As the complex sits above much of the rest of the city on a low hill, peeking out the windows can afford you a sweeping view over the rooftops and across to the forested hills beyond. Put Stift Nonnberg at the forefront of your travel plans using our Salzburg itinerary app.

  • enchanting… a peaceful place. It has two huge and beautiful trees in front of it. The view to the city is very beautiful too. If you are the sound’s of music fan you can find the gate she closes when she starts to sing, ‘I have confidence’.
  • Compared with the hustle and bustle of the touristy places such as the fort and old town this place had the calm and tranquility of space that only this kind of space can deliver. So if you want a break that will allow you a moment of self reflection this is it.
