Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, Varna

See a finely carved iconostasis and bishop's throne at Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin. Prince Alexander Battenberg placed the first stone in the foundations of the cathedral on Aug. 22, 1880. The large Byzantine-cross church is topped with golden onion domes. A group of Bulgarian and Russian artists painted the frescoes on the interior walls in the 1940s. The stained-glass windows depict St. Cyril, St. Methodius, St. Kliment, and St. Angelarius. You can climb 133 steps up the narrow, spiral staircase to the bell tower for views of the city. You must pay a fee to take photos of the interior.
