Create an itinerary including Diocletian's Palace
In the heart of the city look for the ruins of Diocletian's Palace--a significant example of Roman architecture and a World Heritage Site. Between 295 and 305 CE, the Roman Emperor built the palace near his birthplace as his retirement home. Walk under the Silver Gate and enter the the Peristyle, the central open-air area. Opposite the gate is the medieval church of St. Dominic, formerly Diocletian's Mausoleum. Admire the excavated remains of the palace's basement. Look for the two granite sphinxes, which Diocletian brought from Egypt. One is still on the Peristyle, and the second sits headless in front of Jupiter's temple. Planning Split trip won't be overwhelming when you use Inspirock's itinerary maker.

  • This place is truly unlike any place I have been before in that it a Roman palace which has retained most of its physical structure over the centuries. Unlike even in Rome where so much is...

  • My boyfriend took me to Croatia for my birthday, because I really adore this country and croats. Split is very nice city and I liked it much more than Zagreb!

  • It's an old fortress in old town of split. You can roam around the fortress. Mostly it's closed so you can see ruins from outside but still it's beautiful. Many GOT scenes are shot here this whole place has cafes and bar, ice cream shops and shopping outlets. it’s beautiful place
  • Really stunning ancient walls, well preserved and a calm place for walks in the evening. Lovely restaurants and shops around the area. Whilst it is one of Splits most popular tourist attractions there really isn't much to see compared to landmarks in bigger European cities
