Create an itinerary including Karlstejn Castle
Towering over a busy little village, Karlstejn Castle once served as a hideaway for the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Seemingly unperturbed by the passage of time, this 600-year-old structure is situated just 30 km (18 mi) southwest of Prague. The castle's star attraction is a chapel designed by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV to hold his crown jewels, holy relics, and valuable documents. Centuries ago, this chapel safeguarded its treasures behind four doors with nineteen locks. Today, the chapel is open to visitors wishing to see its vaulted ceilings decorated with thousands of semiprecious stones. Most of the castle interior is accessible by guided tour only, so book your tickets in advance. By using our Karlstejn holiday planner, you can arrange your visit to Karlstejn Castle and other attractions in Karlstejn.

  • It was a very nice visit and also interesting. Maybe not very much advisable with little kids since it can be boring for them. However we really liked it.

  • Just to make everyone aware that they should check opening days/hours for the castle before visiting, especially if out of season. We visited on a Wednesday in February to find the town like a ghost....  more

  • We went to see the castle as we had some spare time in Prague. It was nice to see the land outside the capital. Very very green. The castle is nothing special. There are tours in English but you have to pay different tickets if you want to visit the whole castle.
  • Great day trip just 30 minute train ride from Prague. The mandatory guided tours are informative and full of neat information. During winter months, the main part is closed off for preservation, so best to visit after May. We still enjoyed our time at the castle and in town, despite not being able to see everything.
