Create an itinerary including Strahov Monastery
Although its eye-catching spires rise imposingly over the city's skyline, the main attraction of Strahov Monastery remains its library, containing thousands of editions of the Bible. Established in the 1140s for the Premonstratensian religious order, the monastery functioned until 1950, when the Communist regime closed it down and imprisoned most of its monks. Returned to the order in 1989, the monastery underwent massive architectural restorations to repair damage caused by years of neglect. Inside the monastery's main gate, you can visit a 17th-century church, housing a valuable collection of artworks from the Gothic era, and the famed library's two halls. Linked by an elaborately decorated passage, the two halls contain a collection of nearly 3,000 original manuscripts. • You are not allowed inside the actual library without a guide but you cannot purchase the service of a guide. If you pay the ticket, you will only be able to see the library from the outside...

  • The monastery is actually very beautiful. It is a large baroque building with white walls that are covered by bougainvillea (autumn). The red color of the flowers, the red roofs, and the green towers....  more

  • The walk is an uphill journey on cobblestone streets with amazing views, cute shops, restaurants and souvenirs and you get to come across some breathtaking architecture and views of the city on the walk up. The library is one of the top five most beautiful libraries in the world. They have bibles written by hand before the printing press reached Europe. Very Cool to see in person.
  • Uphill walk, reserving a tour recommended. When we were there, all the globes were unfortunately lined up so it was difficult to see them all. The lady in the gift shop was very friendly. She had a stamp for visitors to mark their cards. I asked if she would stamp my journal. She just handed me the inkpad and the stamps and told me to go ahead. Great experience. Do visit the art gallery. Many rooms, great art, quiet, might not be the best place for small children. Pictures below.
