A World Heritage Site, Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids once provided the final resting place for the pharaohs and nobles of Memphis. The ensemble of pyramids and mastabas (tombs made of mud bricks) covers a huge area of the desert--this site was used as a burial ground for around 3,000 years. The main structures include the Pyramid of Djoser, constructed by the royal architect Imhotep--it's possibly the oldest intact stone building in the world. We were there very early in the morning when it was less busy and were able to go inside the other smaller pyramids. Impressive artwork and. You can combine with a visit to Giza but this one is the oldest Pyramid.

Out of all the places visited in a recent trip to Egypt, the Pyramid of Djoser was by far the most pleasant site! What makes it pleasant? 1. First thing I noticed is the energy of the site itself... calming and more relaxing (then most other sites). Not sure if we were lucky, but there weren't a TON of people here. It was so calming and relaxing place, people sat close or on the base of Pyramid meditating. Myself, personally, I felt those who built this Pyramid did it out of love and for a purpose (not being enslaved), knowing for well the purpose of the afterlife, knowing they personally were doing something so very profound for such a king they truly loved and admired. 2. You don't have (a ton of) the vendors following you trying to sell you something. 3. It's much more quite! Such amazing beautiful history in Egypt...
