Taking up a large part of a rocky peninsula renowned for its ocean views, Old Fortress Corfu is linked to the rest of the city by a fixed iron bridge. Visit the impressive site, which sits on the spot once occupied by a Byzantine structure that was largely replaced by the Venetians during the 18th century. Although the fortress rebutted three consecutive Ottoman sieges, it eventually fell under the French rule and joined the Greek territories in 1864. Before you enter, admire the marble statue in front of German general Von Schulenburg, who successfully defended the city from the last siege in 1716. Amazing fortress , that still allows you free reign to walk about for most of it. In good condition for the most part. Just watch your footing coming down from the highest point as the stones are...

Corfu town is great. Even with cruise ships docking often and loads of European tourists , Corfu is a great place to visit. The Fortress is massive and must be seen up close to appreciate it's formidable presence. Well maintained and relatively reasonable entry pricing ( see price list and open times in my pictures).May 2022. Little shade and almost fully exposed on hot days.... bring hats,SPF sunscreen and water. Go for a swim below the Fortress Recommended

Really nice to visit! Entree fee is 6 euros, definitely worth it. Not a lot of explanation but didn't bother us very much (there's a leaflet with some info though). There was also an expo about the history of the Jews in Corfu (we visited May 2021) which was very well presented.
