Create an itinerary including The Palace of Knossos
Built over a Neolithic town, The Palace of Knossos represented the ceremonial and political center of Minoan civilization on Crete. English archaeologist Arthur Evans made his name by working on the excavation and partial restoration of this ancient palace for over three decades, beginning in 1900. The palace complex contains a maze of living spaces, workshops, banquet halls, shrines, and storerooms, built around a central square sometime between 2000 and 1350 BCE. To gain a glimpse into the wealth and sophistication of the Minoan culture, hop on a bus in nearby Heraklion and join a guided tour of the palace's labyrinthine corridors, so vast they gave rise to the popular legend of King Minos and the Minotaur. • The Knossos historical area is very close to the Heraklion and very easy to go by public transport. Area itself is not very big and easy to walk through. It takes few hours max to check everything...

  • Fantastic place for history buffs. It's a Minoan age castle from around 2,000 BC (or even before). It was just staggering to visualize the ancientness of the place. Be aware that much of the palace is a reconstruction and some of the pieces might not have been placed properly or in correct order. Archeology professionals are still trying to figure this out so that makes it even more interesting in my opinion. We took a guide for the tour rather than just wander around. It was not very expensive and we paid for a really amazing one at 100 Euros for 4 people. And trust me it was absolutely worth it. One caveat is that the line to get the tickets is long and takes a lot of time with most of the area not having shade. So it might make sense to get the tickets online prior to arriving at the palace. Guides can be booked after arrival. The total time spent would be around 2 to 2.5 hours. Must visit if in Crete.
  • This place is a must on a list when it comes to visiting Crete's sights. Well organized and a lot to see. Some things are really incredible and nowhere to be found. Large part was closed due to the restorations and work (summer 2022) There is nothing that I can write here that would be a match for this beauty. Simply put - go and visit, you will understand.
