Create an itinerary including Arch of Galerius
One of the city's most important and intriguing landmarks, the remains of Arch of Galerius provide a glimpse into Greece's long and fascinating history. The triumphal structure was built in the 4th century and today three of the eight pillars survive along with the masonry cores of the arches. Roman Emperor Galerius commissioned the monument to celebrate his victory over the Persians, and to this day you can witness scenes of the war on the remaining marble slabs. Spend some time interpreting the depictions and soak up the lively atmosphere of this popular meeting spot. There are a number of bars, restaurants, and tourist attractions in the area. • Spectacular monument created by a little-known emperor (in the West). Could do with better information panels, but our guidebook (Bradt) provided the neessary details.

  • "South of the Rotunda was the triumphal arch (known today as “Kamara”), probably built by the city of Thessaloniki between 298 and 305 AD to commemorate Galerius' victorious campaign against the Persians."
  • It's a cool spot, really accessible. Just walk over the white tower and you are there. You can see a great church near the arch. There is nothing much to do in the area but you can walk over there just see the arch.
