Both a protected reserve and a temple complex, Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary shelters several hundred long-tailed Balinese macaques. The monkeys get their nourishment from the forest staff, which feeds them sweet potatoes several times a day. Though you can't give the monkeys peanuts, cookies, or other snacks, you can purchase bananas if you want to feed the little ones yourself--just be prepared for a lot of attention from these cheeky creatures, and stow away valuables and shiny objects. This jungle sanctuary contains three temples, allegedly constructed in the 14th century. Keep in mind you can enter sacred sections of the temples only if you wear traditional praying clothes. Stop by the forest office near the main entrance, which accepts donations and provides detailed information about the sanctuary's history and significance. Monkey Forest is the perfect attraction for all ages and a respite from the heat. You can spend a long time watching the monkeys play with each other. The park itself is beautiful. There are amazingly detailed statues everywhere. The monkeys are great just follow the rules. Don't make eye contact and carry your belongings tight. There are many ancient banyan trees. You may only need a couple hours at most to see everything. Definitely a place to see if you're in Ubud.
This is a monkey sanctuary; remember who is watching who here. Have fun, be respectful, and enjoy the monkey culture! Plenty of crowds, both humans and monkeys, so be prepared (clothing, water, etc.) when walking through. Monkeys were nice enough, don’t be too aggressive when getting photos. Guides are happy to get you your perfect photo for a fee; another fun option is to relax and let the monkeys come to you. Somebody in your group probably needs to hear/read this-monkeys do not understand human etiquette, it might not be smart to permit/entice them with something shiny/tasty to grab.
