Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario
Take a look inside a Sassi cave dwelling at Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario. Use a guided audio tour to learn about what life was like inside a peasant dwelling. The home is complete with furniture and tools of the era, as well as a room for livestock. Used until 1959, when families living in the caves were transferred by government order to modern homes, the cave house includes four stories with steep narrow stairs, which were lived in by a family of 11 and their livestock. A black-and-white film offers a closer examination of what life was like here during the 1950s. Plan to visit Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Matera attractions using our Matera tour app.

Told to download the app for the museum online tour guide. Then told to turn the volume down so we couldn't hear anything, and everyone else had theirs turned up. Poor customer experience.

Unique experience visiting real place where locals lived before 1950. In addition you are able to listen in chosen language the short 6 min audio guidance. Moving forward you can use your ticket (5 euro) to check 3 more rooms with paintings, pictures of Matera and watch a documentary about the city. Very kind and helpful staff.

It’s about an amazing experience! I ve been there three years ago! Sassi di Matera is not only one of the most remarkable “monuments/places” of UNESCO but also an breathtakingly stunning sightseeing! I do love this divine area and I’ll be back the sooner possible! It’s well worth visiting!!!
