Aso Shrine boasts one of the largest, grandest gates of all Japan's temples, the Ramon Gate. Believed to have been established almost 2,000 years ago, though its true early history remains unclear, the temple stands out as one of the country's oldest sites of worship. Enshrined in the main hall stand 12 deities, including Tateiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, who is believed to have created the Aso area itself. Observe intricate and aesthetically pleasing architecture here, and look out for a sacred pine tree on site, said to bring good fortune to marriages. • A mix of mostly new and some old as the majority of the complex was destroyed in the earthquake. Goushuine only available by the piece of paper - stupid COVID.
  • Shrine at Mount Aso. Building is still under reconstruction (dec-2022). The shrine hall is very big and grand.
